What affects bathtub reglazing cost
Two contractors will quote $300 and $800 for the same tub. Here is exactly why, with the dollar impact of each factor so you can sanity-check the quotes you receive.
Tub material
Porcelain and cast iron are the easiest to prep and prime. Fiberglass needs more careful work because the surface flexes. Some pros charge a premium for fiberglass or refuse it entirely.
Tub condition
Light staining adds nothing. Several chips and deep scratches add about $50. Cracks or heavy damage can add $150 or push you toward a different solution entirely.
Tub size & shape
Standard alcove tub is the baseline. Garden tubs, walk-in tubs, and freestanding shapes have more surface area. Clawfoot tubs add an exterior surface, which is essentially a second job.
Colour choice
Standard white, biscuit, bone, or almond is included in the base price. Custom tints (grey, black, sage) add for the colour mix and the lower-volume materials cost.
Tile surround included
Refinishing the wall tile around the tub at the same time. Adds 90 minutes to two hours of labour. Bundle pricing is almost always better than booking the surround separately later.
Geographic location
NYC, LA, Boston, and SF run 18 to 22 percent above the national average. Rural and small-metro markets run 10 to 15 percent below. See the regional table below.
Non-slip coating
Optional textured finish on the tub floor. Worth the upcharge if you have small children or older adults. Adheres better than aftermarket non-slip strips, which peel the new glaze.
Contractor tier & warranty
Budget operators ($200 to $300) often skip prep and use the cheapest stripper. Mid-range ($400 to $600) is the sweet spot. Premium with 10-year warranty runs $500 to $800. Cheaper is rarely cheaper after year four.
Regional pricing in 2026
Standard alcove tub, professional reglazing, mid-tier contractor. Use the multiplier to estimate other tub configurations in your region.
| Region | Major metros | Standard tub price | vs national |
|---|---|---|---|
| Northeast | NYC, Boston, Philadelphia | $420 to $720 | +18% |
| West Coast | LA, SF, Seattle, San Diego | $440 to $750 | +22% |
| Mountain West | Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake | $340 to $600 | baseline |
| Midwest | Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis | $310 to $550 | -8% |
| Southeast | Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte | $320 to $580 | -5% |
| Rural / small metro | Most non-metro markets | $280 to $510 | -15% |
How to find the sweet spot
Get three quotes. Throw out the lowest if it is more than 25 percent below the others (the prep is being skipped). Throw out the highest if there is no concrete reason for it (no warranty upgrade, no specialist work). The middle quote, with a 5-year warranty and a clear chemical and ventilation answer, is usually the right one.
